Flood defences are in operation in York, ahead of an expected rise in river levels this morning.

City of York Council say they're prepared for a forecast 4 metre peak.

The flood defences at Clementhorpe and Peckitt Street will remain operational, the temporary Fordland’s Bridge is still in place and front line teams will be on standby ready to deploy pumps if needed.

River levels are not expected to reach the same heights as last week, and residents are being reassured that the current predictions will not impact on the city in the same way as last week.

A number of flood warnings and alerts are in place across the York and North Yorkshire Area.

City of York Councillor Paula Widdowson, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:

“The flooding response that we saw last week was a real testament to the hard work of front line teams and a range of different agencies working together under extremely challenging conditions.

“We are as confident that the levels expected by the Environment Agency will not be what we experienced earlier this month and we have flood defences in place to protect the city.

“We want to reassure residents who might be anxious that our front line teams are prepared and ready to act as soon as needed.

“Thank you also to residents for your patience and understanding, and for pulling together to support each other and our teams during their work.”
