Work is continuing to develop a masterplan for Scarborough's North Bay.

A draft proposal to regenerate the area has been put forward which identified three key opportunities for development:

1. The Open Air Theatre

  1. Proposals to enhance the user experience and create a nationally significant venue by:
  • Increasing the venues crowd capacity
  • Introducing weather cover to parts of the venue (but maintaining its open air theme)
  • Improving infrastructure including permanent staging and green room facilities etc.
  • Enhancing the user offer e.g. food and drink offer
  • Extending the programme of events to include other cultural activities
  • 2. New Visitor Attractions

Providing new visitor attractions in the area including:

  • Adrenaline experiences and adventure sports such as climbing walls, cycle parks etc.
  • New family visitor attractions such as new theme parks
  • Food and beverage venues
  • 3. New Visitor Accommodation

Providing distinctive visitor accommodation options for the area, with a focus on health and wellbeing and adding to the existing range of offerings including:

  • Serviced apartments and lodges
  • Self-catered pods, cabins and camping facilities
  • A high quality hotel offering (4-star plus)

It is after a public consultation ended earlier this month.

Alex Richards, Head of Economic Development and Regeneration at Scarborough Borough Council, said: "We received well in excess of 700 responses and all of those need to be analysed in detail but in general, there's support for the types of activities and themes we've identified but once we dig down into that consultation feedback then there may be some new ideas that come forward.

"Of the responses that I've seen and skim read, most people are very supportive in particular of investing in outdoor sport, like surfing, walking, cycling and camping. Additional covered entertainment and family attractions within that area would be well supported as well.

"We will analyse those responses, provide a detailed feedback report which we'll take to Cabinet in May and based on what the feedback says, we'll make recommendations to Cabinet to finalise the masterplan and get the draft completed in the Summer of this year. We will then seek to move to implementation."
