The UK's biggest ever climate and nature event is back on the Yorkshire Coast.

People and organisations are being urged to do their part and show they care about climate, nature and each other, as part of the 'Great Big Green Week.'

Locally, there is a packed programme of free events and activities, special offers called Big Green Deals from local businesses and a quick and easy way for individuals to get involved by committing to a #randomactofgreenness.

Events include a free family day for local residents (YO11, YO12, YO13 postcodes) at Scarborough Castle on today (Sunday 25th September), a repair cafe at The Street tomorrow (Monday 26th September), loads of crafting and reading activities at all local libraries throughout the week, numerous litter picks organised by Keep Scarborough Tidy, and beach sweeps organised by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

The Big Green Deals include special offers on artworks, beer, meals, bicycle safety checks, cosmetics, surf and paddleboard lessons, pet products, fashion and more.

Everyone can take part by just doing one simple action that benefits nature or the environment and posting a picture of themselves doing it on social media with the hashtag #randomactsofgreenness.

David Stone, Strategic Development Officer at Coast and Vale Community Action, said: “Local people care about nature and the climate – why wouldn’t you when you live in such a beautiful part of the world? Great Big Green Week provides an opportunity for all of us to get together and show what we can achieve as a community to tackle climate change.”

Carol Eves, owner of the Material Moves fabric shop on Gladstone Road, said: “My business provides resources and know-how to help people make their own clothes. Much of the fashion industry has a huge damaging impact on climate and the environment. I’m doing my bit to challenge that and if I can do it, I’m sure others can too. That’s what Great Big Green Week is all about. All of us trying to make a difference.”
