A charity that helps the elderly in Whitby and surrounding villages is in desperate need for volunteers.

The Trinity Centre based at Flowergate Church provides care and activities to those in need.

Trustee Jane Bristow said: "We try and provide socialisation and a range of activities basically to help because a lot of the older people are feeling a bit lonely, isolated and they just need a bit of company so we try and provide that for them and we also give them a good meal.

"We do armchair activities, games, activities, some crafts and generally talking bceause that's often is the one thing that they all need. We also need people to take lunches to people who can't get into the centre. We also occasionally take them to visit somewhere else.

"We need volunteers to help our lovely staff because with the best one in the world you cannot devote your entire attention to everybody, so a nice friendly face to help with whatever it may be like something simple such as helping them to put their coats on, cutting something out if they're making something or listening to them if they want to talk about something.

"Let's say somebody in a remote place needs a pair of shoes, we might need someone to go with them and help them. We do singing and all that kind of thing. The staff need help when we do take the people out because some are in wheelchairs, some can walk, but they need a bit of aid."
