A theatre in Scarborough is getting ready to open its doors again - as North Yorkshire enters tier 2 on Wednesday.

Like all others, the Stephen Joseph has been closed during both lockdowns, but now staff are preparing to welcome customers in time for Christmas.

Social distancing measures are in place, as well as temperature checks and hand sanitiser. The bar is also closed, with drinks served at seats.

Jeannie Swales, who works at the theatre, said: "like every other theatre in the country, it's been a really tough one.

"We've really fought hard to try and get stuff back on stage, and we were being successful in that, and suddenly second lockdown kicked in."

A one-woman show called The Snow Queen will be on stage over Christmas, playing to about 95 socially-distanced audience members, instead of the normal 400.

Jeannie added: "It will hit the box office, but we hope not too much.

"We've put an awful lot of work into our Covid-safety measures, and so far, we've had 100% feedback from people who have been, who say they feel totally safe."
