Armed Forces Day National Event in Scarborough: Seven days to go
Thousands of people are expected
This time next week Scarborough will be hosting the Armed Forces Day National Event.
Military personnel, a senior politician and a member of the Royal family will all be coming.
There will be parades, exhibitions and displays in the air including the Red Arrows.
Major John Senior is one of the organisers and also co-ordinates 'Heroes Welcome' nationally. He said: "The scheme is central to our National Armed Forces Day delivery, particularly when it comes to making sure our miliary families who are coming to the town for the day are really well looked after. There'll be extra special deals for them like free ice-creams for the children, sticks of rock and candy floss etc.
"A Heroes Welcome is a reaction to some soldiers who had not been perhaps as well welcomed or looked after in a town down south as they might have been, and Scarborough actually took an individual stand with the Mayor.
"It was adopted the town in 2008. It was literally Heroes Welcome in Scarborough, a very simple statement. It got picked up across the nation really and it was driven by the national association and civic officers picked up on it. Mayors across the whole nation started adopting this scheme.
"It went down as far the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar is still running a very active scheme. We just facilitate and there's a website that we offer with all the downloads you can have and we leave it up to towns to get on with it, so it's very hands-off but we have an association of towns across the nation."
