The Queen's New Year Honours recognises people on Yorkshire Coast
Some people are getting a Knighthood or an Order of the British Empire
A number of people on the Yorkshire Coast are getting the Queen's New Year Honour.
Her Majesty has recognised 122 people for their services to the United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories.
The Honours List has been published today and it includes:
Knighthood
Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, for political and public service.
It says:
"THE RT HONOURABLE ROBERT GOODWILL MP Robert Goodwill is a dedicated public servant, who has been involved on the frontline of politics for the past 30 years.
"He currently serves as the Member of Parliament of Scarborough and Whitby, a position he has held since 2005 when he regained the seat from Labour. Prior to that he was a Member of the European Parliament for the Yorkshire and the Humber region from 1999-2004 and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Delegation in Brussels.
"He has demonstrated a commitment to Conservatism in Yorkshire and the North East starting from when he unsuccessfully contested the seat of Redcar at the 1992 General Election.
"He has served as a Whip and as Minister of State in four Government departments: Transport, Home Office, Education and DEFRA."
Sir Robert Goodwill said:
"It was a very big surprise but a very pleasant surprise to be recognised in this way. I got to know on the 1st of December, there was an email from the Cabinet Office asking me if I would accept if it was offered and then the recommendation went up to the Queen and she thankfully approved it.
"I've had a career not only representing the people here in Parliament but I've been a minister in four departments, so I hope some of the things I've done there have maybe caught the attention of those who make these recommendations and put me there.
"It makes no difference whatsoever and I hope my friends will continue to call me Robert and of course Maureen is now Lady Goodwill which I think she has mixed views about, but it's quite nice to have that little accolade and maybe when I send emails to ministers on behalf of constituents maybe they'll take a little bit more notice before this happened.
"The honours system is great and I mean yeah OK people always criticise MPs for getting honours, but it's the people who do a lot in their community who have been recognised as well in this honours list, the people who've given up their time freely, who work for charities but the impression that I get is that everybody is dead chuffed when they're recognised for an honour and I'm dead chuffed myself."
The Knighthood section also includes Michael John Smith from Scarborough for services to law enforcement.
He works as the Digital Media Manager for Metropolitan Police for services to law enforcement.
OBE - Order of the British Empire**
Lee Shane Cooper from Scarborough for services to forestry. He works as a Forest Research Worker.
Paul Samuel Creelman from Scarborough for services to fostering and youth work. He works as a foster carer and support worker.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
“These recipients have inspired and entertained us and given so much to their communities in the UK or in many cases around the world.
“The honours are an opportunity for us to thank them, as a country, for their dedication and outstanding contribution.”
Sir Philip Barton, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service, said:
“I congratulate everyone receiving an honour and thank them for their hard work and years of service. The UK’s impact around the world depends on exceptional people like those recognised in this year’s Queen’s New Year Honours. We are grateful for their outstanding contribution.”
