A lifesaving charity on the Yorkshire Coast is trying to raise money in a special year.

Samaritans of Scarborough has been in existence for 50 years and is holding a Summer Ball on the 9th of July.

Libby Lorton-Gilbert, Vice-Director and Treasurer of the town's branch, said: "It's being held at the Rugby Club in Scarborough. We have lots of things going on; there'll be live music, disco, three course meal and we'd really like to sell all of our tickets which will help go towards raising the money that we need.

"We are celebrating the fact that Samaritans of Scarborough have been running in Scarborough for the last 50 years. We're celebrating the past and present volunteers some of whom have been with us for over 20 years.

"We have 150 tickets to sell. They are £50 per person and we've sold about 80 so far. There's a three course meal, wine of the table, we've got a silent auction and we'll have a raffle.

"This cost £35,000 a year and we're an affiliate branch so we don't get any help from our central office. The importance of keeping our branch open is for our callers who ring us to speak to us when they're in distress."

After costs, it's expected £13 from each ticket sold will be left for the charity.

To buy tickets, email the Director at scarborough.director@samaritans.org or visit Hearts and Crafts on Bar Street in Scarborough.
