A proactive police operation has been taking place across the Borough of Scarborough over the last fortnight.

Officers have targeted dangerous drivers, safety of women and girls on a night time, county lines drug dealers and those involved in cross-border and rural crime.

North Yorkshire Police say they will continue taking action with increased patrols through the festive period and beyond.

Superintendent Andrea Kell, Senior Operational Commander of Scarborough and Ryedale, said:

"We've executed a number of warrants, we've recovered various quantities of drugs which are now being investigated, we've engaged with the public and generally had a warm reception in terms of our briefing about the fatal 5 and in terms of driving, particularly around this time of bad weather, and we've been out engaging with the public in terms of education and awareness.

"The proactive fortnight has been really useful in actually developing intelligence which we can then develop into further warrants. There's plenty of things in the pipeline and lots of engagement with our communities and just showing that visibility, presence and reassurance to make everyone feel safe and feel that they're able to go about their business.

"My message to drivers is just be alert really and concentrate on your driving; think about your driving, your speedbelt, your speed, think about whether you've got any distractions like a mobile phone, as the roads have been difficult over the last few days with ice and fallen trees, so we just want to keep everybody safe.

"If people have any information about concerns, they've seen drugs, or suspect there's drug dealing going on in their community, please ring that intelligence in through 101, engage with your community support officers, because if it's sufficient we can then go and get a warrant.

"In terms of our visibility as we're coming to Christmas now with lots of people out shopping, we want to keep them safe, we want to make sure they're not subject of internet fraud and shop lifting. So it's about education of the vulnerable particularly in terms of buying things safely on the internet. A lot of people will be going out to Christmas parties and just making sure they're aware of their surroundings, aware of the people who might be approaching them and making sure that they have that education really.

"I'd just like to thank the community of Scarborough Borough and Ryedale, there's been some really good engagement and positive feedback when we've been speaking to members of the public, which I've been able to feed back into the teams. It's like a continuous cycle of we serve the public, the public gives us information that we can then take in proactive steps against those who cause us harm."
