It depends if the schemes and plans already in place are good enough.

Schemes and plans already in place in Scarborough Borough WILL go ahead if they are good enough.

The Leader of North Yorkshire County Council has been telling us more about how things will work once a new single county-wide authority takes over.

We told you last week about the government's decision to scrap district councils.

Carl Les said:

"You would hope that all those schemes are sensible schemes that have been validly costed and are the right things to do. If there was a dash to go out and spend money because we've got some money in the bank and we don't want to big, bad new authority to get a hold of it then Government have powers to step in and say 'that's not on'.

"I'm very conscious of the fact that the County Council also changes and becomes part of this new authority. We want to leave it in the best possible position for the new authority to take over.

"You'll still have people emptying the bins, you'll still have people doing planning applications and all the other things that they do in the same way that the County Council operates doing social services, mending highways and whatever, but we need to build the transition now in the next year.

"We have to now reach out to our district council colleagues, there's some excellent people working in the districts and running the districts and we need to start working together on the transition, because the transition has to got to be as smooth as it possibly can be for the benefit of our residents, businesses and communities".
