Masterplan to regenerate Scarborough's North Bay progresses
It's going to be finalised and adopted after approval from the Borough Council's cabinet
A masterplan to regenerate Scarborough's North Bay is set to be finalised and adopted.
The Borough Council's cabinet approved to progress the scheme on Friday (1st July) after public consultations were held.
It will see improvements for residents and visitors, like accommodation and attractions, as well as building on existing assets around the area.
Liz Colling, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth, said: "What came across to us very clearly was that the North Bay is different to the South Bay, that's what makes it special and that's what we seek to preserve. The masterplan outlines the need to provide improvements for residents, businesses and ensures that any development compliments the wider area and considers the North Bay as a whole.
"There's a requirement and need from residents, businesses and our visitors about new visitor attractions. In particular, building on sport, adventure sport, experience, family attractions and an enhanced food and beverage offer. There's also a willingness and a need for different types of visitor accommodation."
Carl Maw, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Housing, added: "I'm glad to see there's a recognition between the differences of the two bays. It's good to see the proposals are built on the natural building and serenity of the area and hopefully it's kept that way as the plan progresses. Hopefully when we get a North Bay plan in place, there'll be investors. I also like the fact that it's a joint up thought rather than it being just tiny little projects."
Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Steve Siddons, said: "There's a lot of interest in it and quite rightly. It's an important part of our town and heritage. It felt really important to make sure that this was different to the South Bay. The South Bay has its own unique character and the North Bay does.
"We need to finish the job off and this is the process that we have to go through to do that. I'm really looking forward to later in the year. I know that developers and investors have already shown an interest. They know what we're doing, they're waiting for this plan to be approved and I'm confident that we will see movement."
