A draft cultural strategy for the Borough of Scarborough has been approved.

It aims to support economic growth, wellbeing, social inclusion, and to attract investment and visitors.

The Council is also looking to re-position the Borough as a centre for creative learning, develop and retain local talent, and to promote its cultural offer.

Jim Grieve, Cabinet Member for Quality of Life, said:

"It's a fabulous piece of work that's multi-agency across the full borough, north to the south, everything included. It goes so much more beyond just art and theatre, it's about our base history and where we've come from.

"It takes in everything from Captain Cook and the history of fishing and Whitby, the Brontes and the herring gulls in Scarborough and down to the history of the cobble landing in Filey. It pulls in from every different aspect what everybody in the Borough is culture in this area.

"It's a great piece of work that on adoption allows us to develop the cultural heritage and work towards making culture much more accessible for all the residents and visitors of this fantastic Borough. It's nice and simple. It just helps us expand the cultural development of this area."
