People in the Borough of Scarborough are being urged to have their say on a draft gambling policy.

A consultation is set to start as a full review is due as it has been three years since the last one came into effect.

The Gambling Commission issued new guidance earlier this year and the proposal looks to take that into account.

Jane Mortimer, Scarborough Borough Councillor who is a member of the Licensing Committee, said:

"For me it's the problem gambling rather than gambling per se that's awkward. The enforcement action has never been a strong suit for the Borough Council, it's always been difficult as we're in a long, spread out community and I think it's essential that this is beefed up somehow or another.

"I'm quite happy for it to go out to consultation especially with the child protection and the safeguarding issues coming forward as well and the multi-agency involvement if possible, because that's essential.

Fellow commitee member, Neil Heritage, added his own concerns:

"It's something that the Council can't be in control of and is becoming more popular is the online gambling and gaming. Everything's moving to online now but we're doing our best for the premises that we control."
