Rise in Scarborough's Coronavirus rate
The borough's seven-day infection rate has increased slightly.
Scarborough’s coronavirus infection rate has increased slightly, as the overall picture in North Yorkshire continues to improve.
The borough’s infection rate, per 100,000, now stands at 13, after spending almost a week at 11.
It remains below the averages for North Yorkshire and England, which stand at 17 and 21 respectively.
It means the borough is averaging 14 new cases a week.
In an email to residents last night, North Yorkshire County Council chief executive Richard Flinton wrote that a small number of cases of the so-called Indian Variant of the coronavirus, believed to be more transmissible, have been found in the county.
He wrote:
“A small number of cases of the Indian variant have been identified in the county, as elsewhere across the country. We are well prepared and our health partners are working to minimise the spread.
“We can take advantage of opportunities afforded by this week’s easing with confidence, but I understand some people will be hesitant about venturing out after so long under restrictions.
“For all of us to do so with confidence, we must all do so carefully. That means continuing to follow the simple precautions: hands, face, space and fresh air.
“In addition, please get the vaccine when it’s your turn. If you are eligible but haven’t had the jab for any reason, please book your slot.
“The vaccine is our best opportunity to protect ourselves, our families and communities, so please get both doses of yours.”
Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this weekend, for anyone with symptoms to get tested.
