With archery being played at the Olympics, an open day is being held in Scarborough today.

Children and adults are being invited to try their hand at the sport for free.

It is being hosted by Scarborough Archers from 12pm to 4pm at their field on Osgodby Lane, Osgodby, YO11 3SB.

John Naylor is the club's Chairman and said:

"It's open for absolutely anybody that fancies doing archery. It's not a problem if you're only seven or eight years old, come on down. You can try it and it's free. It's just to get people interested in archery.

"We spend most of the time outdoors, you get a little bit of exercise walking, a nice gentle walk, and mentally you get into a frame where you focus on what you're doing and it makes you relax. There's no pressure, we don't shoot in teams and we're not competing against each other.

"The people that have been through the beginners courses this year have all been exceptional. They've all shot well, they've taken to it and they've all said that it's something they've always wanted to do. Probably about 30 or 40 percent are coming back and joining the club which is just wonderful really.

"For a few years, we've talked about how great it would be if we had our own indoor shooting facility. At the moment, we shoot at the Sixth Form College's sports hall during the winter but we do actually have planning permission now for our own indoor shooting range with clubhouse facilities".
