Scarborough and Whitby MP defends Government's Plan B measures
Robert Goodwill says the restrictions have been brought in at the right time.
The MP for Scarborough and Whitby has been defending the introduction of Plan B measures.
Robert Goodwill has been speaking as objections have been raised to Covid passports coming to large venues including nightclubs - which is to be voted on by Parliament tomorrow.
It's also feared measures like this - along with the wearing of face-coverings which became compulsory on Friday - have come too late.
Mr Goodwill says:
"These new rules aren't too onerous in my view, such as wearing a mask in a theatre or cinema. The one area that will see some changes are nightclubs, and I understand they've had a tough time of it. However, you can still produce a lateral flow test if you don't want to show your vaccination status.
"The economy is now bouncing back and we've seen record levels of employment and record levels of job vacancies. A balance has to be struck, as any measures we take will have an impact on the economy.
"I think we took action at the right time. This Omicron appears to be much more infectious than other variants, but it also appears from early indications that it's less severe. However, what we need to do is make sure that the NHS doesn't become overwhelmed.
"Not only were we the first to get vaccines into people's arms, but we've also seen a very good vaccination rollout. The message is clear: if you've not been vaccinated then please go and do so".
