A seriously injured police officer's had to be cut from his patrol car by fire fighters after a crash on the M62 overnight.

It happened between junctions 34 and 35 just before midnight.

Two people managed to get out of a second car that was involved, two others also had to be rescued and were taken to hospital.

There are reports the police vehicle was involved in a high speed pursuit at the time of the collision.

Hundreds of vehicles were trapped on the carriageway whilst the road was blocked through the early hours, for several hours.

The motorway remains closed Eastbound between the A19/Selby and M18/Goole exits and is expected to stay shut until at least lunchtime today (Saturday 4th September) with National HIghways Yorkshire saying they hope to be able to open the also closed Westbound carriageway soon.

Investigation work into the collision is currently taking place at the scene.
