Services suspended from Harrogate to Leeds after person hit by train

It happened this morning when a person collided with an LNER train bound for London Kings Cross

A person has been hit by a train near Harrogate.

It happened after 7.30am today (19 April) when a person collided with the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service which bound for Kings Cross Station.

As a result all services between Harrogate and Horsforth have been cancelled and replaced by bus services. Services are continuing from Leeds Rail Station.

British Transport Police said:

"British Transport Police were called to the line near Horsforth at 6.43am this morning (19 April) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and establish the full circumstances behind their death."

An update from Northern Rail at 11:59am said:

"Leeds to York due 13:11 will be reinstated. It will be started from Harrogate. It will no longer call at Leeds, Burley Park, Headingley, Horsforth, Weeton, Pannal and Hornbeam Park. This is due to the emergency services dealing with an incident."

A spokesperson for LNER posted on Twitter:

"Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Leeds and Harrogate all lines are blocked.

"It is with great sadness to report due to a person being hit by a train the 07:36 Harrogate to Kings Cross due 10:32 will be started from Leeds."

In a statement, Northern Rail said:

"Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Leeds and Harrogate all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 12:00 19/04.

"Whilst the emergency services are undertaking their duties train services between Harrogate and Leeds are suspended in both directions of travel."
