1,006 people have died from Covid-19 in North Yorkshire since the pandemic started.

The milestone was confirmed in the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum this morning (10th February).

539 of those deaths happened in hospitals across the region, with 387 in care homes.

Corporate Director of Health and Adult Services at North Yorkshire County Council, Richard Webb, said: "It's very sad that we've reached this milestone, and we will honour and remember those who have lost their lives to this virus.

"We have 1,006 reasons to stick to the rules and keep our loved ones safe. People are still travelling long distances to visit the region, but it's vital that people observe the rules.

"We're on standby to provide surge testing in communities where transmission rates are high.

"I'd urge anyone who has been contacted to come forward to get a vaccine".
