Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre is looking to replace its old advertising boards with digital upgrades.
The owners of the Grade II Listed theatre, which plays host to premieres from the town’s resident playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn, have applied for planning permission to replace signs on the Westborough side of the building.
The building was formerly an Odeon cinema before becoming the theatre in 1996.
The planning submission submitted to the council states:
“The existing illuminated poster cases date back from the conversion of the building from the Odeon in 1996 and are in poor condition and require replacement.
“At the time of the conversion appropriate listed building consent and advertising consent were sought
“We propose to replace the existing, with two digital displays. The digital displays are our preferred option to traditional poster cases, as they offer a number of advantages, including that the displays are able to change dynamically so that we can advertise a number of forthcoming shows at the theatre on a scrolling basis.
“They do not require staff to change the displays as they can be updated remotely, and we do not require bespoke posters to be printed.
“The proposed screens are purpose designed for this type of use and are housed in a sturdy weather and vandal proof enclosure, which has a similar footprint than the existing cases.”
The plans are now out to consultation.
