Jobs boost for Scarborough as staycation boom expected

Bus company East Yorkshire has announced it will be taking on new staff in Scarborough ahead of the anticipated boom in visitors this summer.
The company says it is giving Scarborough residents the chance to train to become bus drivers to help run its network of local and tourist services along the coast, including the Coaster service between Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough, and the Beachcomber open top buses.
Following the lifting of lockdown restrictions across England, visitors are expected to flock to towns such as Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, so East Yorkshire is expecting its seaside buses to be in demand this summer.
The company, which already employs over 130 people in Scarborough and Bridlington, will be taking on new drivers to work for the summer season, based at their 60-bus strong Scarborough depot.
Successful applicants will undergo an intensive course in bus driving with the companyâs award-winning in-house training academy, giving them all the skills they need to drive a bus and provide excellent customer service to passengers.
Ben Gilligan, East Yorkshireâs Area Director, said:
âAfter a difficult year, weâre looking forward to the relaxation of lockdown rules over the summer, and weâre expecting our Scarborough buses to be very busy as thousands of people who normally travel abroad decide to try a traditional British seaside holiday.â
âTo enable us to keep up with demand, weâre looking for friendly, confident people to train to be bus drivers. You donât need to have driven a bus before, you just need the right attitude, and weâll teach you the rest. Those who previously worked in retail, customer service or hospitality have many of the skills weâre looking for, so itâs an ideal opportunity for those whoâve been made redundant during the pandemic to start a new career.â
