Bridlington lifeguards to remain on beaches after agreement renewal
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has renewed its agreement with the RNLI to provide lifeguards in Bridlington.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has renewed its agreement with the RNLI to provide lifeguards in Bridlington.
They will be there on weekends at the town's North, South and South Cliff beaches.
From the 3rd of July, the service will be provided on weekdays as well.
Kirsty Salisbury, General Manager of Coastal Services at the authority, said:
"It's good to have a high profile provider of the lifeguarding service and obviously the RNLI is a household name, everybody knows who the RNLI are and what they stand for and they provide such a professional lifeguarding service that it was essential for us to have them on the beach this year.
"It's not just about lifesaving, which obviously they do and they have done every year they've been with us; but they also offer amazing advice so telling people not to take their inflatables on to the water, they're there to help people with minor first aid and they're first responders for the ambulance service as well.
"The RNLI bring a lot of their own signage with them so they get you to swim in-between the flags that sort of thing, but we do a lot of ours with social media so we put safety messages out quite frequently, to check tide times, we have quite a few weever fish around at the moment so we're offering advice on what to do if you get stung.
"We hope that people come and behave responsibly on the coast. One of the issues that we have had in previous years is people using disposable barbecues, which we allow them to do , but we just ask them to make sure they put them out properly and take them off the beach so they don't become a hazard for anybody else.
"We do have some really, really responsible visitors. We don't see the level of littering that we do see often in the news which is quite negative. However we can always just remind people that come and have a really good day but just take away everything with you. There's lots of bins at all the beach access points and leave our beaches as beautiful as they are when you find them."
Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets, said:
“I am delighted that we have been able to work with the RNLI again to fund the provision of this vital service, and I look forward to its further expansion for the summer holidays.”
