A local MP tells us he wants to help resolve an on-going standoff with residents and County Hall about the future of a local bus stop.

Campaigners have camped out at the 1950s shelter in Sheringham, in an effort to halt it's planned demolition.

"Improving passenger safety has to be the number one aim"

Steff Aquarone is North Norfolk's MP and says he sympathises with local people:

He told us what's needed to end this standoff:

"We need to have an open-minded discussion and creatively about we can make this all work for all the different vested interests.

That's the community, who want to preserve the shelter, it's the transport users, who want a better service and it's the County Council who have guidelines to stick to.

"Improving passenger safety has to be the number one aim of any investment in improving public transport. But beyond that we need to improve accessibility and expand capacity.

"Retaining the existing shelter is not a viable option"

An Norfolk County Council Spokesperson said:

“We welcomed the opportunity to discuss with Steffan Aquarone MP the extensive engagement with the local community that has shaped these proposals and we agreed upon the clear benefits a safer and more accessible transport hub with improved seating and passenger information will bring to the town.

“The concerns raised by some local residents are fully noted and have been considered throughout the development of the project, with many suggestions being incorporated into the design but retaining the existing shelter is not a viable option and disrupting the works by entering a construction site is dangerous for all concerned.

“We want these works to be delivered as safely and quickly as possible so everyone living and working in or visiting Sheringham can benefit from this new amenity and we ask that those involved leave the area immediately.”
