Haven Bridge closes for 12 days to allow for 'major works'
Vehicles won't be allowed to use the structure in Great Yarmouth until Friday 12 December
A nearly 100 year old bridge in Great Yarmouth is now closed to all vehicles for the next 12 days.
County Hall say it's being done to ensure major repairs can be carried out on the Haven Bridge, including replacing barriers there and mending footpaths.
The bridge will remain open for pedestrian use throughout the works that will cost nearly £118,000.
On the 10 and 11 of December both footways will be closed for test lifts, but a mini bus shuttle service will be provided free of charge with signed pick up points.
Decision-makers say the work's been doing now to avoid disruption over the summer, with the Herring Crossing staying open.
"This reduces our costs and limits further disruption"
Councillor Graham Plant, cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure said:
“Haven Bridge is nearly 100 years old and requires continual maintenance and improvement to ensure it remains safe and fit for purpose.
“While previously these works may have been done at different times, the availability of the fantastic new Herring Crossing, means we can now close it for an extended period to get multiple works completed in one go. This reduces our costs and limits further disruption for the travelling public.
“Carrying out these works early in December also means we’re avoiding the busy summer season which is so crucial to the town’s economy and also avoids the two weeks directly before Christmas”.
