Two men have been charged in connection with the death of a dad who died following a suspected assault in Northumberland.

On the morning of August 23rd last year, police were contacted by medical staff at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington who were caring for an injured man.

It was reported that the man – 39-year-old Andrew Peart – had previously sustained a head injury and attended Accident and Emergency to be checked over earlier that day.

After being admitted to hospital, Andrew’s condition deteriorated and sadly, despite the efforts of medical staff, he died from his injuries on August 30th.

Following his death, in a tribute Andrew was described as “deeply loved by his family and friends”.

Andrew’s next of kin continue to be supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers.

An investigation was launched by officers from the Force’s Major Investigation Team, who believe Andrew’s injuries were sustained as a result of a suspected assault on Stakeford Lane, near Guide Post Working Men’s Club, in Guide Post, Northumberland, at about 10.20pm on August 22nd.

Following extensive enquiries, a man – aged 28 – was initially charged with manslaughter and subsequently charged with murder.

He last appeared before Newcastle Crown Court on February 13 and was further remanded in custody ahead of his next scheduled appearance at a later date.

Now, two men – aged 39 and 36 – have been charged with assisting an offender in relation to Andrew’s death.

Both men are due to appear before magistrates in South East Northumberland today (Thursday, March 21).

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr, said: “Our thoughts remain firmly with Andrew’s friends and loved ones.

“The last seven months have been incredibly difficult for them and we continue to offer any support they need.”

Det Chf Insp Barr added: “Two men have now been charged with assisting an offender in relation to the investigation into Andrew’s death and are due to appear before court.

“This follows another man being charged with murder.

“I would ask that the public refrain from any speculation – both online and in the community – which could have an impact on the ongoing legal proceedings.”

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact police via the ‘Report’ page of the Northumbria Police website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20230823-0273.
