It has been just over 3-weeks since the Sunderland riots and the council tell us about the impact it's had on the community.

They hope that a partnership with the new Labour government will see investment back into the community so that it never happens again.

Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "Undoubtedly, it's had a significant impact on some of our communities.

"I've had a number of meetings with some of the faith leaders in the city and there is still an element who are feeling the effects of that terrible night on the 2nd of August.

"As a City Council, we have regular dialogue with the government. We hosted a ministerial visit yesterday from Lord Kahn, the Minister in the local government department, really talking about how we can build back better.

"What happened over that weekend is not the true face of Sunderland.

"Sunderland is an open, welcoming, vibrant and diverse city and we will not let a tiny, tiny minority ruin that reputation.

"We've been through a period of 14 years of austerity that has ripped the heart out of some of these communities. We've got a new government now who's got a commitment to work with cities like Sunderland."
