Parents of secondary schoolchildren across Teesside are being warned of the dangers caused by illegal vapes.

All schools in Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland are issuing letters following incidents which resulted in a number of young people receiving hospital treatment.

Tests at a specialist laboratory that took place after last week’s incidents involving teenagers found the vapes contained samples of spice.

Mark Adams, Joint Director of Public Health for South Tees, said it was vital all parents and children were aware of the risks.

He said: “As the letter makes clear, spice can be extremely dangerous.

“Licensed, regulated vapes containing nicotine are a useful tool to help adults quit smoking but they should not be used by anyone under 18.

“People using vapes containing spice are risking sudden loss of consciousness and in more serious cases even heart attack.

“The recent distressing incidents have been dealt with incredibly well by schools and our local hospital, but we really must push the message that these illegal vapes can cause serious harm.”

The letter to parents warns of the dangers of using vapes that belong to other people.

It urges people to treat any vape not purchased from a shop as illegal and suspicious.

Anyone who feels unwell after using a vape should immediately call 999 for medical help.

Public health teams from both councils work closely with schools on providing advice to students about the dangers of vapes. Training has also been provided to teachers and other school staff on how to respond to incidents.

Reusable vape pens are known to be filled with drugs by dealers – with devices believed to be sold to young people using Snapchat and other social media apps.
