A politics expert in the North East says there is a lot of interesting issues in this year's US elections that we have not had to think about before.

It is one month until people in America vote for who will be President out of Donald Trump or Kamala Harris.

Thom Brooks, a professor of Law and Government at Durham University, said:

"The president is a hugely important role. They appoint a lot of senior folks and it has a very strong symbolic thing. The President isn’t just the head of the executive branch in the United States they are also the head of state and so they represent America.

"This election will mean something for women’s rights, it will mean something for America’s role in the world and everything in between and beyond. You have two sides that do not see the world the same way and perhaps some of the mostly stark different views we’ve seen in a long time.

"There's only been once before where you had a woman as the nominee of one of the two main parties following Hillary Clinton. Somebody (Kamala Harris) who wasn’t in the race a few months ago is now the main nominee and is ahead. Can somebody who wasn’t running at the beginning of the year, can they become president by the end of the year? That would be something worth watching."
