Tapyard Studios toasts opening success
Tapyard Studios, a dynamic new industrial events space, officially joined Newcastle's cultural landscape with its popular launch event last week. Nestled in the vibrant Ouseburn district within Hoults Yard, this innovative venue showcased its unique blend of daytime relaxation and nighttime revelry, featuring a café by day and a lively bar with a performance space by night.
Founded by music enthusiast and entrepreneur Sam Roberts, Tapyard Studios is the culmination of his rich background in music performance, production, and hospitality. "Music is absolutely at the heart of the operation," said Roberts. "Tapyard Studios is the culmination of all those experiences."
A veritable selection of some of the most pioneering North East artists were handpicked to grace the stage at the event including the genre-bending LAZYRAVE, electronic act Late Night Drum Club and Rivkala, an emerging neo-soul vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, and pianist, who was recently announced as winner of Drake Music Collective's Emergent Artists of 2023 competition.
As well as the live performances, the event featured delectable street food from Acropolis, and a selection of premium beers from esteemed breweries like Full Circle Brew Co, Northern Monk, and North Brewing Co.
The event was a resounding success, with attendees praising the venue's atmosphere, performances, and overall experience. Roberts commented, “Sunday was everything we had hoped it would be. Ant did a brilliant job of selecting class local acts. Each of them were brilliant but my personal highlight was Swannek. They are outstanding musicians. There was a real buzz around the place on Sunday. I frequently heard people saying how great the space is while walking through the crowd, so I am confident people will come back!”
Chief venue music programmer, Ant Thompson added, “What a great day! It’s a pleasure to be involved with Tapyard Studios and getting to deliver such an amazing opening day. The vibes were amazing all day long and seeing people enjoy their Easter Sunday while listening to great live music is what it’s all about. I have no doubt Tapyard will continue building and playing host to many more incredible nights out.”
With its successful launch, Tapyard Studios has firmly established itself as a must-visit destination for music enthusiasts in Newcastle and beyond.
Looking ahead, Thompson teased what audiences could expect from Tapyard Studios' live program in the coming months. “Our launch event was the perfect opportunity to introduce the venue to the community and test it ahead of what I'm sure would develop into a jam-packed live calendar,” he revealed. "Keep your eyes peeled on the Tapyard socials for exciting touring shows and unique, one-off events."
The venue boasts three state-of-the-art studios and a 300-capacity performance space, making it a prime destination for musicians and music lovers alike. "Our goal was to create an atmosphere where performers felt inspired to give their best and audiences had an unforgettable experience," added Roberts.
Roberts, who relocated from Leeds to Newcastle to realise his vision, emphasised the city's thriving music scene and vibrant community spirit as key factors in choosing the location. "Newcastle aligned perfectly with our goals," he explained. "The city's sense of togetherness and its enthusiastic embrace of music made it an irresistible choice - something which we witnessed first-hand at the launch party."
With its unique blend of ambiance, technology, and hospitality, Tapyard Studios is poised to become a cornerstone of the city's cultural landscape.
