Over a year after the riots in Sunderland, one of the organisations who had their building burnt to the ground say they are almost ready to re-open.

Citizens Advice was targeted after violent disorder broke out last August in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

But now, thanks to the hard work of the team there and the council, things are starting to get back to normal.

Denise Irving, chief executive of Citizens Advice in Sunderland, said: "The outpouring of love and support that we got was absolutely outstanding and amazing. We were blown away by the community spirit of everybody on that Saturday mroning lokoing to help clean up and get sorted out.

"It was absolutely dreadful. It was heartbreaking. I think we were all seriously affected. We had woodchip wallpaper, the carpets weren't brilliant but it was one of those things where it was our home. It was somewhere where we serviced client and we were cut to the core. We just didn't know what we were going to do.

"We're very proud that we still managed to open the Monday morning after the riots and serviced the clients that I had told to come back on Friday afternoon, so not perfect but really we didn't have that much impact on service.

"Everybody's been outstanding; the team were amazing, they were in cleaning up, getting filthy, and they all took it in their stride. It was absolutely outstanding that we all pulled together and made it work."
