We are being urged to take extra care this weekend with the amber weather warning for snow coming into force in the North East later.

The alert covers most of Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear - except for along the coast, which should miss the worst of the weather.

Alex Deakin, meteorologist from the Met Office, said: "Across the North East of England we’re likely to see some wet weather moving in Saturday night and lingering into Sunday. Now that will be a mixture of rain, sleet and snow, but we could see some heavier snow depending on the exact position of this low-pressure system.

"We could see quite a few centimetres of snow developing, especially over hills where we could see a significant dump. But even at lower levels, there could away from the coast be quite a bit of snow falling.

"We must stress there is a bit of uncertainty about just how far north this weather system gets, so keep up to date with the forecast, but we could see several centimetres across parts of the North East during Sunday."
