Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner tells us that it is important to tackle hate crime in the community.

They are aiming to strengthen communities by supporting, listening and tackling hate crimes in all its forms.

Susan Dungworth, Northumbria PCC, tells us about this years commissioners fund and what it focuses on.

She said: "This year it was focused very much on community cohesion and hate crime.

"Community organisations put in bids for work around those things. Some of that was recognising things as a hate crime.

"It's not anti-social behaviour and it's not a neighbourhood dispute. It is people perpetuating hate against other people."

She continued to say: "Clearer understanding of the huge tapestry of different cultures, faiths and experiences that we have in the North East.

"So that people see that as a strength rather than as a weakness."
