People in the North East warned of potentially deadly risks of electricals
New stats reveal 32 fires were caused just last year in our region
Fire safety experts in North East are warning about the potential deadly risks of people using white goods such as tumble dryers and dishwashers.
It comes as new stats reveal 32 fires were caused just last year by these types of household across our region.
Leslie Rudd is from Newcastle and she is the Chief Executive of Safety First: "People have nightmares and they have lots of mental issues. We've seen this from a lot of people we've spoken to who've had these fires, people who are still living in temporary accommodation and you know it's really, really difficult.
"They happen for a number of different reasons; so wiring can become damaged over time or perhaps the ventilation of the appliance might be obstructed or perhaps the lack of maintenance. You should be cleaning lint filters on tumble dryers.
"You need to have a working smoke alarm really because quite often people will use these appliances at night and if that's the case, and a fire occurs when you're asleep then unless you've got a working smoke alarm, it's going to be a lot less of a chance you're going to be alert to that fire."
