The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Mortimer Primary School has proudly launched a sustainable school uniform initiative, which provides every family at the school the option to access free school uniforms. This initiative aligns with the PTA’s broader commitment to making Mortimer Primary a supportive, inclusive, and well-rounded environment for every pupil attending the school.

Addressing Fast Fashion’s Impact on the Environment

With the rising concerns about the environmental impact of fast fashion, Mortimer Primary’s sustainable uniform initiative takes a bold step toward reducing clothing waste. According to recent reports, fast fashion significantly contributes to air pollution, water contamination, and soil degradation. Through the school’s free uniform program and regular swap shop events, Mortimer Primary aims to reduce the reliance on new school clothing, encouraging families to reuse and recycle instead.

Inspired by eye-opening data featured in a recent Netflix documentary, the initiative sheds light on how clothing waste exacerbates environmental challenges. The PTA recognises that every garment reused not only eases financial pressure on families but also helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions caused by textile production and landfill waste. This aligns perfectly with Mortimer Primary’s commitment to sustainability and educating the next generation about the importance of protecting the planet.

Zoe Craig, PTA Chair, comments: "Clothing production and waste have an enormous impact on our environment, and it’s up to communities like ours to lead by example. The uniform swap program isn’t just about saving money—it’s about teaching our children that small actions, like reusing a jumper or PE kit, can make a big difference. By encouraging sustainability, we’re fostering responsibility and care for the planet while making life easier for our families.

Our sustainable uniform initiative and fun-filled events aren’t just about raising money—they’re about creating a space where everyone feels included, connected, and proud to be part of the Mortimer family. By working together, we’re making a real difference for our children.”

Beyond the uniform program, the PTA, which is run entirely by volunteer parents, plans a lively calendar of sociable events designed to create fun, memorable experiences for pupils and families alike. These events not only bring the community together but also play a crucial role in raising funds to support the PTA's initiatives, which have a goal of raising significant funds for new play areas and green spaces at the school.

Recent funds raised by the PTA have already contributed to important resources including sensory boxes for each classroom, which are aimed at supporting children to stay focused and engaged with their learning. Additional contributions have also supported school trips, playground equipment, and new reading materials.

Investing in Student Wellbeing and Inclusion

The PTA’s fundraising reflects a strong commitment to creating an environment that meets diverse needs to support pupil wellbeing. The sensory boxes, now a fixture in each classroom, are one example of how funds are being used to provide resources that help students concentrate and engage in lessons. This effort is part of Mortimer Primary School’s ongoing focus to foster an inclusive learning space that values each child’s unique needs.

Recently, Mortimer Primary was selected as one of only 15 educational institutions in South Tyneside to participate in a pioneering Sensory Inclusive Environments Pilot. This program will allow the school to implement best practices for all pupils whilst supporting students with diverse needs, furthering Mortimer Primary’s leadership in inclusive education.

Highlights of the PTA’s Initiatives:

  1. Sustainable Uniform and Seasonal Swap Shop: The PTA’s uniform swap program offers families the chance to freely exchange gently used school uniforms, providing a budget-friendly and environmentally friendly alternative to new purchases. The program includes themed swaps, such as Christmas Jumpers, to make those one-off seasonal clothing occasions more accessible and helping to reduce waste.
  1. Fundraising for Wellbeing and Environment Enhancements: Funds raised through PTA events directly support projects that enhance the wellbeing of pupils and improve the school environment. Future goals include developing green spaces and upgraded play areas that create essential outdoor spaces for exercise and where pupils can play and thrive.
  1. Community Events to Strengthen School Spirit: From Glow Discos to Christmas Fayres, the PTA’s event calendar is filled with activities that not only bring joy to students but also help fund essential resources for the school. These events create lasting memories and foster a sense of belonging within the Mortimer community.

Mr. Bennett, Head Teacher at Mortimer Primary School adds “I am delighted to see our PTA working as such a supportive and effective part of school. They have gone beyond fundraising to making a huge impact across the entire school community. Their collection and distribution of uniforms has enabled us to support many families and reduce waste at the same time. I look forward to seeing our relationship grow and strengthen for the good of all pupils over the coming years.”
