A man has been charged with attempted murder following a suspected assault in Gateshead.

Just before 8pm on Tuesday (July 16), officers were alerted by the ambulance service to an incident at an address in the Regent Court area.

Police attended the scene, where a man in his 50s was found to have sustained serious head injuries consistent with having been caused by blunt trauma.

He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident. A 42-year-old man was arrested and has since been charged with attempted murder.

He is due to appear before magistrates in Newcastle today (Thursday).

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is clearly a serious assault, and all our thoughts remain with the victim’s family at this difficult time.

“From the outset, we’ve been determined to find out the full circumstances behind the assault.

“We believe all parties to be known to each other, and a huge amount of work has already gone into this investigation.

“With a suspect now due to appear before the courts, I would like to thank everyone who’s played their part in assisting with our enquiries to this stage.

“I would also ask everyone to avoid speculation both on social media and out in the local community.”
