A man has been charged following a fatal collision in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Liam Bowes has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after a road accident.

The 37-year-old, of Bradyll Street, Durham, has been remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Shortly before 2am on Sunday emergency services were called to Neville’s Cross on the A167 in Durham following reports of a crash between a woman and a car.

The 22-year-old woman was taken to the RVI, in Newcastle, but sadly died a short time later.

Three other people - two men aged 38 and a 59-year-old woman - were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They have been released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.
