Man charged with attempted murder following serious assault in Newcastle
Seven others released on bail as investigation continues
A man has been charged as part of an attempted murder investigation following a serious assault in Newcastle.
Emergency services were called to a property on Durham Street in the Elswick area of the city at about 6.45pm on Friday 21st November. They had received a report from the ambulance service concerning the welfare of a man and a woman inside.
Both individuals, aged in their 60s, had suffered serious injuries. The woman is currently in hospital in critical condition after sustaining serious head injuries, while the man remains in a stable condition as he recovers in hospital.
Following the incident, Northumbria Police launched an investigation. Eight people were arrested in connection with the assault. Ross Clancy, a 39-year-old from Dunholme Road, Newcastle, has now been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of burglary, and one count of theft of a vehicle.
Clancy is due to appear before magistrates in Newcastle today (25th November).
Seven others released on bail
Seven other individuals arrested as part of the investigation have been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Those bailed include four men, two aged in their 20s, one in his 30s, and one in his 40s, all arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, while two others, aged in their 40s and 60s, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Police appeal for information
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, of Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts very much remain with the victims of this incident and their families at this difficult time, and we will offer them any support we can."
“Our investigation is ongoing and we would continue to encourage anyone with information who has not yet come forward to do so.”
DCI Atherton urged members of the public to avoid community speculation about the case and respect legal proceedings now that a man has been charged.
Northumbria Police are also looking for information about a stolen red Renault Twingo that is connected to their investigation. The vehicle was thought to have been parked in Newcastle’s West End between 6.30pm and 8pm on Friday 21st November before being located in the Longbenton area of North Tyneside on Saturday morning.
