Man appears in court following the death of a teenager in Newcastle
The 16-year-old was riding his bike when he was struck by a car last Friday
A teenager has died following a road traffic collision in Newcastle.
Just before 9pm on Friday, police received a report of a collision on Walker Road in the Byker area of the city between a silver VW Golf car and a pedal cycle.
Emergency services attended and the rider of the cycle – a 16-year-old boy – was found to have sustained serious injuries.
The teenager, who can today be named as Jayden McGuinness, of the Walker area, was taken to hospital for treatment but despite the efforts of medics he sadly passed away in hospital on Sunday.
Jayden’s next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers.
Following the collision, a full investigation was launched by Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit into the circumstances of the incident.
As part of enquiries, officers arrested a man in connection with the collision.
The man – 28-year-old Ryan Elsender – was then charged with death by dangerous driving.
He appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Monday) where he was remanded into custody.
Officers continue to appeal to anyone with information regarding the collision to come forward.
"A tragic incident"
Sergeant Russell Surrey, of Northumbria Police, said:
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with Jayden’s family at this devastating time.
“We will offer them any support they need.
“We continue to appeal for any witnesses to what took place on Walker Road on Friday evening to come forward.
“We are particularly keen for those with dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision to contact us.
“A man has now been charged in relation to the incident and we would ask that members of the public refrain from speculation – either online or in the community – and respect the legal process.”
Witnesses are being urged to come forward, particularly those with dash cam footage.
Police are urging people to contact them on 101 and quote log number NP-20240927-1100.
