Former Newcastle United striker becomes dementia charity ambassador.
A North East charity has announced the appointment of two high profile ambassadors this week
Former Newcastle United number 9 Joe Allon and well known North East actress Lesley Saint John have taken on the roles at Newcastle based Charity Dementia Matters
Dementia Matters (formerly Dementia Care Initiative, Dementia Care Partnership, and then Dementia Care) was set up as a registered charity in 1993 to provide services for people with dementia and their carers. Though there name has changed, there goal remains the same: to provide a voice for those with living with dementia, and provide family centred services for those who need our support.
Joe Allon a former professional footballer who played for 10 clubs including Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Brentford in a 14 year period scoring 135 goals in 361 league and cup games. After retiring from the game he has spent his time on the after dinner curcuit and supporting local charities was only to happy to support the charity after an introduction by close friend and fellow ambassador Steve Wraith. “ I am delighted to be coming on board as an ambassador for such a wonderful charity. My parents both suffered with dementia. I look forward to raising funds and awareness. “
Lesley Saint-John is an actor best known for her roles in Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Byker Grove and is a well known figure in the North East of England.
She said “It’s such a great privilege to be on board as an ambassador for this special charity in the north east. Dementia is very close to my heart and I'm very proud to support Dementia Matters.”
The centre provides specialist care, support and advice across there services to people with dementia and other neurological disorders, such as acquired brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. They also support a small number of people with functional mental health disorders and learning disabilities where there skills meet individual's specialist requirements. There services include residential, day services (Newcastle and Northumberland) and home support.
