Investigations are taking place into the cause of a large fire in Sunderland - which led to a huge emergency service presence all day.

The blaze broke out in the early hours this morning at a commercial garage on Villiers street - and 7 appliances were sent to the scene, including an Aerial Ladder Platform.

Roads in the area were closed, and nearby residents had been encouraged to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the fire at a commercial property on Villiers Street in Sunderland has been extinguished.

“At the height of the fire up to 30 firefighters had been tackling the blaze. Hendon Road has now been reopened to vehicles, however the streets in the immediate vicinity of the building will remain closed for a prolonged period of time.

“The buildings have been damaged by the fire, and further investigations will take place between the service and the Police.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has worked with us throughout this incident, including our TWFRS colleagues and local partners.

“Our crews left the scene at 2.08 pm.”
