Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue are urging people to be careful over New Year near open water when out drinking with friends.
They tell us to take precautions such as don't walk home alone, try not to walk near the river and to pre-plan your journey home.
Steve Thomas, head of prevention and education at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It's about teaching people about the dangers and providing just some little bits of advice, like don't walk home alone, try not to walk home near the river, pre-plan your journey home if you can.
"Being in the fortunate situation, we are to have two major rivers in our county where there is just that unusual and unfortunate situation where you could fall in.
"The overall message is that we really want you to enjoy the festive period, but most importantly, to stay safe and enjoy yourself whilst being very considerate of the dangers that the water poses."
