Every dog has its day! In Newcastle, it is this Saturday, 24th August, when NE1 will host its inaugural ‘Dog on the Tyne’ event on Newcastle’s Quayside from 10am – 2pm. In early celebration of International Dog Day, which falls on Monday, a host of fun and games is being staged for the city’s canine companions, their owners, friends, families and dog enthusiasts.

The paw-fect event offers everything from dog yoga to a dog agility course, dog-related retail stalls, a canine selfie station, a drop-in muscle MOT for dogs, and a dog-friendly walk along the Quayside. Visitors can expect loads of free activities with chances to win prizes and plenty of photo opportunities across the day.

The agility course will give dog owners the chance to test their pooch on a short obstacle course with prizes for the fastest contestants, while stalls along the Quayside, opposite Wesley Square, will sell dog accessories, dog treats and dog food.

Happy Tails, the clinical canine massage and Reiki specialists will offer free drop-in Muscle MOTs for dogs or a hands-on mini-treatment which could make a positive difference to their lives.

Ouseburn-based Yoga Therapies will host free dog-friendly yoga sessions at the Swirle Sculpture (along from the Pitcher and Piano) with canine friends and their humans encouraged to join in with the downward dog, happy baby and other classic yoga poses. Two sessions will be held, at 11am and 1pm. Places are free, but booking is essential.

At midday, dog owners can collect a map and enjoy a ‘mooch with their pooch’ – a short dog walk from the Swirle along the Quayside, across the river, then looping back to the start. Those who finish the walk will receive a NE1 Dog on the Tyne commemorative dog bandana as a token of their participation. Places are free, but booking is essential.

Businesses on the Quayside will also be getting into the canine spirit, with Quayside Garden, formerly Urban Garden, giving away free ‘pawpachinos’ for pooches taking part in the day.

An Arts and Crufts station will give visitors the chance to create commemorative paw prints of their dogs, using dog-safe ink and cards as a memento of the day.

NE1 has thought of everything, including extra bins to keep the Quayside clean and sanitary, cooling mats and refreshing water bowls in case the weather gets hot. There will even be a dog paddling pool for those wanting to dip their paws in the water.

Kitty Brown, Marketing and Events Executive at NE1 who has organised the Dog on the Tyne event said: “We’re so excited to host our first NE1 Dog on the Tyne event and can’t wait to welcome and celebrate with all our canine friends. We hope dogs will bring their owners to enjoy the celebrations, have their photos taken and make paw-print souvenirs to commemorate their day. It promises to be a great day out for dog lovers and canine enthusiasts, so come down to the Quayside to enjoy the event.”
