The annual Newcastle Mela festival is marking its 30-year anniversary this bank holiday weekend.

The celebration of culture and diversity are encouraging people from all backgrounds to attend.

It attracts over 40,000 visitors each year and showcases the rich heritage of Pakistani, Bengali, Indian, and other South Asian cultures.

Taj Mohammed, event director at Newcastle Mela, said: "Mela actually means meeting. On the two-days at the Newcastle Mela you have thousands and thousands of people gathering together.

"It doesn't matter what your background is, whatever your culture is, we're the same at Newcastle Mela.

"There's no difference whatever your background is, whether you're a Geordie or you are from anywhere else."

The vibrant two-day celebration is held annually over the August Bank Holiday weekend in Exhibition Park, Newcastle upon Tyne.
