The North East's newest immersive social gaming experience takes on global challenge for first time
Activate at MetroCentre, the UK’s newest high-energy immersive, active gaming experience, is inviting fun seekers with a competitive edge to take part in a global challenge.
Blending the thrill of video games with real-world physical activity, Activate is a first-of-its-kind immersive experience that lets teams of 2-5 players enter a high-energy arena filled with dynamic game rooms. Using cutting-edge technology, players test their speed, agility, memory, problem-solving and teamwork in a variety of game challenges that feel straight out of a futuristic sport.
Nine games across 12 real-time interactive game rooms will feature in the global league including Strike, Portals, Control, Press, Hide, Laser, Grid, Mega Grid and Hoops.
Activate, which is number two in Tripadvisor’s attractions in Gateshead with 4.9 out of 5 stars on the reviews app, launched in Canada in 2017 and now has 60 successful locations across Canada, the US and Dubai, and was brought to the UK by We Do Play, a leading experiential leisure group, with the first one launching at The O2 in December. Activate launched in the Metrocentre in July.
Teams of friends and family can now register to take part in the Activate Global Leagues, which brings teams of players from around the world together – virtually obviously – to compete in high-energy, competitive Activate games. So, Newcastle gamers can be challenging gamers in San Francisco to be the highest-scoring Mega Grid competitor. The league begins on 22 September.
Each week, teams face off in a series of games against other Activate Global League participants as they battle for dominance within their divisions. The top-performing teams earn a spot in the playoffs – and the winners proceed to the finals for a chance to win a range of incredible prizes.

And the icing on the cake would be if a team from the UK is crowned the worldwide winner.”
Registration is open now and closes on 10 September and the league starts on 22 September and runs for five weeks with playoffs beginning on 27 October and finals on 3 November. The cost to take part in the five-week competition that takes place every Monday and Tuesday from 22 September is £75 per person with groups of between two and five competing. The winning team will be awarded 15,000 coins, which can be exchanged for a number of prizes including a Playstation 5, Apple Watch and Bose headphones. Alternatively, the winners can use the coins for more time at Activate.
