Woman dies after being hit by tram in Tameside

Police were called to the Market Street tram stop on Ashton Road just before 8pm last night

A woman has died after being hit by a tram in Tameside last night.

Just before 8pm, police were called to reports of a collision between a tram and a pedestrian on Ashton Road in Tameside, by the Market Street tram stop.

Emergency services attended and a woman - believed to be in her 30's - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The tram stopped at New Islington Metrolink whilst the driver assisted police with their enquiries.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

PC Phillip Collingwood, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said:

"This is an incredibly upsetting incident for the woman's family and loved ones, and our thoughts remain with them this at this difficult time.

"This incident happened in a busy location where there were a number of witnesses present who might be able assist police in their investigation to establish the full circumstances of this incident.

"If you have any footage or any information and have not yet spoken to police, please get in touch as soon as possible. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us to complete our enquiries."
