Vandals in Bolton are setting fire to wheelie bins to inhale toxic fumes from the burning plastic, a message from police warns.

Part of Longsight Park's been subject to massive damage after being destroyed by the flames - leaving the kids play area unusable.

Both Greater Manchester POlice and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have received several reports of bins being set on fire in recent works.

Police say the damage has a wide spread effect on the community and are urging residents not to leave bins out when they've been collected.

Posting on Facebook a statement reads: "This is extremely dangerous as the fumes from the plastic are highly toxic. Please do not leave waste bins out on bin collection day. Once they have been emptied please take them back onto your properties and out of general public view if possible."

"The neighbourhood team are working towards dealing with this problem as it sad to see a children’s play area destroyed."
