Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has stated he had no choice but to focus on the Europa League because of injuries, after this weekend’s defeat against Tottenham.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 in the host’s final game at White Hart Lane, after making eight changes to the side that qualified for the Europa League Final in the week.

Mourinho said, “I’m not upset because we had to make that decision, when people say we gambled, we didn’t gamble.”

“We didn’t chose Europa League, we had to do it because if I have Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rojo… I can rotate; I can go for every match. When I have 14-15 players, I can’t do it.”

Victory in the second-string European competition secures a place in next seasons Champions League.

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is looking to hold onto 4th place in the top flight to secure their chances of playing Champions League football.

City overcame Leicester 2-1 at the weekend and will face West Brom on Tuesday evening, in what will be Pablo Zabaleta’s final home game after 9 years at the club, as his contract expires in the summer.

Yaya Toure, whose contract also ends in June, is expected to be offered another deal by the club.
