Tributes to "voice of United"

Former friends and colleagues of Tom Tyrrell pay tribute

Tributes are being paid to former Piccadilly Radio/Key103 commentator Tom Tyrrell who died on Thursday.     Tom was the voice of Manchester United both on the airwaves and as stadium announcer at Old Trafford.   He also wrote many books about the club.

Since then tributes have flooded in on Twitter:   Friend and former colleage Stuart Pyke said: "So sad to report that Tom Tyrrell has passed away - friend + the voice of Manchester United over three decades at Piccadilly Radio. Top man."   Former KEY103 sports reporter and TV presenter Dan Walker said: "It was a great pleasure and an education to work alongside Tom Tyrrell at Piccadilly Radio. Very sad to hear he has died. Admired by many."

Comedian Justin Moorhouse, a United fan, said: "Any Red or indeed Blue from Manchester of a certain age will be sad to hear the passing of Tom Tyrrell, you can hear his voice now can’t you?"

Former Manchester Evening News reporter Stuart Mathieson: " So sad to hear this. Spent many hours travelling with Tom. Great story teller and good company."

Commentator John Gwynne: " He was a great guy. I owe my 37 years in media to him."   Fraser Dainton who now works for Sky Sports News: " His enthusiasm for all things Manchester United was second to none and he was never afraid of giving young talent like me a leg up the ladder"

John Pickford who was Tom's Sports Editor said: " Tom was one of radio's best football commentators. He reported on many of United's triumphs at home and in Europe. An absoulte expert on the club. He inspired and helped many people like me in their careers."

His daughter Angie thanked everyone for their comments on behalf of the family:" It's great to read everything people are remembering about dad."
