Tributes paid to 'terrific' Winsford United player

The side have announced Ross Aikenhead has passed away on social media

Football clubs in the North West have been paying tribute this weekend to footballer Ross Aikenhead who has sadly died.

He used to play for Wythenshawe Town before heading to Winsford United, who have called him a 'fantastic young man and a terrific footballer'.

The news came a day after Winsford postponed their match against the Cheadle Heath Nomads.

Wythenshawe will host a minutes applause before their game later today (April 1st).

Whilst, on on X, the Ammies have called their former player a 'talented attacker with a keen eye for goal, and a fantastic lad off the pitch.'

In a statement on Facebook from his former club, Wythenshawe Town, bosses said: "On behalf of everyone at Wythenshawe Town FC we send our deepest condolences to the family of Ross Aikenhead; Ross played with us in preseason and early part of the current season.

"At tomorrows game there will be a minutes applause before the game in remembrance for Ross."

Winsford United said: "It's with deep sadness that we have to announce that our player Ross Aikenhead has sadly passed away, Ross was a fantastic young man and a terrific footballer. He will be sorely missed by everyone associated with the club, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Ross's family and friends.

"RIP Ross."
