Tribute paid to 'gentle giant' Warren Burns as man charged with murder

A murder investigation has been launched in South Manchester following the death of 37 year old Warren Burns.

Warren sadly passed away in hospital following an incident on Sunday 21 May 2023, where he was assaulted by intruders at an address on Heysham Avenue in Withington.

Following the assault, Warren was taken to hospital but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly passed away as a result of his injuries yesterday (Thursday 25 May 2023).

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this time.

20 year old Brandon White of Radstock Close, Fallowfield has since been charged with attempted murder.

A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

A 19-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been released on police bail whilst enquiries continue.

Warren's family paid tribute in a statement which said:

“Warren was a much loved son, brother and partner and had only just become a father which he absolutely loved. He was a larger than life character with a gentle soul, often referred to as a gentle giant. He was very fun loving, and livened up any event he attended. Life will not be the same without him.

"It’s heart-breaking that he will never see his son grow up and experience all that life has to offer. He was simply was the best, a true Legend and he will be greatly missed.”

Detective Chief Inspector Nichola McCulloch of GMP's Major Incident Team said:

"Firstly, I would like to extend my condolences to the victim’s family at this extremely difficult time.

"This is a shocking incident which has resulted in a tragic death and the investigation team are working around the clock to find and arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.

“The charge and arrests are the result of extensive work being undertaken by the investigation team and I would like to assure the public that we will leave no stone unturned.

“I understand the concerns the community will have after such a violent attack but I would like to reassure you that this is believed to be an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public. Nevertheless, there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days and weeks and officers will be able to answer any concerns you might have and offer reassurances.

"We are also appealing for anyone with information to come forward. This includes any witnesses, anyone with knowledge of the incident, CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage in relation to this incident."
